In such a rapid transition towards cleaner, sustainable methods of transportation, the significance of skilled technicians reaches its zenith. Technicians are the backbone of the EV ecosystem, engaged in the work of keeping these high-tech vehicles in excellent condition. But, are we prepared for this shift? Organizations like the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) are, in fact, working hard to ensure the workforce has the requisite skills to maneuver through the fast-paced changes that electric vehicles are seeing.

Bridging the Skills Gap for Technicians: ASDC
Clearly, the need for skilled technicians for EV is glaring. How does one embark upon this process? Enter the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC). This body is directly bridging the skills gap by running various training programs, certification courses, and initiatives for EV professionals.
ASDC’s e-learning platform has a very competent and wide-ranging offering comprising 46 courses ranging from fundamental concepts of electric vehicles to advanced-level training in EV diagnostics and maintenance. The range of courses gives freedom to technicians to complete their training at their own pace. Some are even being provided free of charge, courtesy of partners who promote accessibility to these essential skill-development courses.
However, ASDC’s involvement with building the future of EV workforce does not end there. An additional boost to the EV sector in India is provided by government policies, which grant incentives like subsidies, tax rebates, and infrastructure development, thus creating an increase in demand for skilled technicians. This is hence a timely opportunity for ASDC to fulfill its vision of training the next generation of EV experts.
Major ASDC Projects That Are Creating a Difference
ASDC covers a wide area of interest and behind many programs that are significantly creating changes to the future of EV technicians:
GIZ Project – Green Skills Training for EV Service Technicians: The initiative centers around labor force training for ITI graduates in specific EV jobs such as EV technology, maintenance, safety protocols, and diagnostics. A noteworthy aspect of the project is its focus on inclusivity and stimulating female participation in a male-dominated industry. This project has already achieved 19% female participation and a remarkable 100% placement record, including placements in Tata Motors.
Project Shakti: With the Bihar Skill Development Mission and Patna Municipal Corporation, Project Shakti makes women stronger in the automotive sector with e-Kart driving training. This project counseling not just helps women learn to drive, but also customer service and safety, further advocating for personal growth and community development.
Project SAKSHAM: A joint effort between Hero MotoCorp Ltd and ASDC to empower women to be technicians in the two-wheeler sector. With an ambitious target of training one lakh women over five years, Project SAKSHAM aims for gender diversity in the automotive industry and for it to be inclusive.
GIZ Fire Safety Project: With the increase in the demand for electric buses, fire safety training emerges as yet another need to be addressed. The ASDC and GIZ have developed a multi-layered training program on emergency preparedness, climate change, and safety for stakeholders involved in electric buses. The training package also offers e-learning options, which ensures easy access to safety training for all concerned stakeholders in the EV ecosystem.
ASDC National Automobile Olympiad: This one-of-a-kind competition aims to pique the interest of young minds in the automotive industry. With an average participation of greater than 32,000 students in the last year, this initiative stands open for students from class 6 onward, thereby promoting career options and giving impetus to future interests in the EV sector.
When the Future Looks Bright: A Collective Venture
The workforce for the EV revolution must be skilled and ready to start implementation. ASDC is making great strides in this direction toward filling the skills gap; however, this is a truly collective endeavor that requires support from industry leaders, government, and educational institutions. Promotion of gender equity in the sector, thereby encouraging more women to consider careers in automotive and EV industries, also deserves a lot of attention.
The future of electric vehicles shines bright, albeit one that will come through concerted efforts towards training a diverse workforce.
